John 4:25-42
Welcome to this Word Lesson, entitled “Called to Evangelize,” based on John 4:25-42. This Lesson is the familiar account of JESUS’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. JESUS’ encounter with the Samaritan woman is a microcosm of the Great Commission, for JESUS would later instruct His disciples to be His witnesses “in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8b).
In this Word Lesson, JESUS is foreshadowing His own evangelistic work to those whom the Jews despised, the Samaritans. What will be most important to note is that JESUS’ evangelistic encounter with the Samaritan woman first produced her confession of sin, which then empowered her to be a persuasive witness unto Him, thus drawing her whole town to “Come see a Man…”
Between her confession of sin and her witness to Him, JESUS amazingly revealed two great truths to this woman whom most despised. The first truth was His update on the true worship of God and the true worshiper whom the Father seeks; and the second was the truth of His Identity as the Promised Messiah. The fact that the woman confessed to the truth of her sin is what gave her an ear to hear, a heart to believe, and ultimately a tongue to witness to these two great truths. – thus fulfilling her CALL TO EVANGELIZE~!!!
